Preservation Louisville’s newest program entitled “Preservation S.O.S: Save Our Shotguns” is a program that is meant to educate our community about Louisville’s large inventory of historic shotgun houses and what role they played in Louisville’s history. Preservation S.O.S is a program that involves selection of a shotgun-style home for exterior renovation to highlight and promote renovation of the existing housing stock of shotgun homes in Louisville. Preservation Louisville will work with the selected owner of a shotgun home and teach them about how to maintain their property and restore its historic significance, identify exterior renovation measures that preserve the historic character of the house, and provide donated materials and labor for the renovation. The program is limited to exterior repairs. Preservation S.O.S will involve not only the property owner but also volunteers and participants from Preservation Louisville’s “Hands On History” program, which teaches maintenance and restoration techniques by highlighting a different preservation trade every month. With the involvement of the Metro Landmarks and Historic Preservation Districts Commission and Louisville’s Habitat for Humanity, Preservation Louisville hopes to teach not only shotgun homeowners, but also the entire community about the importance of this housing inventory. Preservation Louisville hopes to inspire community members to care for these houses in their neighborhood. Preservation Louisville will strive to be a resource for the community in these preservation efforts. Preservation Louisville has an application that interested property owners must complete if they would like to apply to participate in the program and applications will be accepted through mid May. Participation is limited to low or moderate income applicants in low or moderate income neighborhoods in Jefferson County and the overall program will serve low and moderate income communities. Preservation Louisville will select proposed projects for participation in the program based on the merits of the proposal and the potential to promote renovation of shotgun houses in Louisville.
