Save the Water Co. &

Odd Fellows Hall

The Water Co. block is an important part of Downtown Louisville's historic street-scape that creates an unique sense of place in our community. Bounded by Second, Third and Liberty streets and Muhammad Ali Boulevard this block once had several historic buildings some of which are now gone and along with them a part of our city's unique history.

The Water Co. block was first listed on Louisville's Top 10 Endangered Places list in 2005 because of its significance and the opportunity for future development. The Louisville Water Co. buildings & Odd Fellows Hall remain on the block and we are asking OMNI HOTELS to:

  • + choose sustainable development
  • + choose to integrate the remaining historic buildings
  • + choose to preserve Downtown Louisville's historic street-scape & sense of place!

Fairness

Preservation Louisville, the Fairness Campaign, the Williams-Nichols Collection, the Kentucky Heritage Council and State Historic Preservation Office have partnered to launch the "Kentucky LGBT Heritage Initiative." This initiative results from a $25,000 matching grant from the National Park Service as part of their recent initiative to increase the number of listings in the National Register of Historic Places (National Register) associated with Latinos and other underrepresented communities, including African Americans, Asian Americans, and LGBT Americans.

Over the course of the next year and a half, the "Kentucky LGBT Heritage Initiative" will compose a Historic Context narrative on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population of Kentucky and propose at least two National Register nominations related to that Historic Context, including the Henry Clay and Whiskey Row buildings in downtown Louisville, where early LGBT gathering spots in the mid-20th Century were housed. The Henry Clay was home to the Beaux Arts, widely considered Louisville's first LGBT bar. A 1947 photograph of the Beaux Arts' interior is attached from The University of Louisville Photographic Archives.

In the fall, series of meetings will be held across Kentucky to collect LGBT historic narratives and identify regional places of LGBT historic interest. Right now, anyone with information related to Kentucky's LGBT history should e-mail History@Fairness.org or call the Fairness Campaign office at (502) 893-0788. The Historic Context will be completed in 2016 as part of the Fairness Campaign's 25th anniversary celebrations.
